What is balance in life? We hear so much about getting balance in life these days. But what is it, how do we find it, where do we need it, and when is it important to seek it out. In CTI's co-active coaching, balance is defined as the act of making powerful life choices and selecting the experiences you want most, rather than dashing about either at the mercy of circumstances or trying to have it all (CTI).
Why do we care so much about finding balance in our lives? Achieving balance makes us feel whole and fulfilled. When we are feeling balanced we are empowered and life seems to be in control for us. Our choices are purposeful and aligned with our values and priorities.
When do we need to find balance in our lives? The search for balance is an ongoing effort. Every day our lives are filled with options and possibilities and we have the choice to determine what we say yes to and what we say no to. It is all about choice, realizing that not choosing is in itself a choice. Throughout our day we determine where we focus our attention. When our choices are aligned with our values and priorities we feel balanced.
How do we create balance in our lives and what steps can we take? We must first start by recognizing that no matter what the situation is we have the power to choose. We must overcome our tendency to see ourselves as stuck and limited by our particular circumstances. Next we must examine and evaluate the current perspective we have. If this perspective is not serving us and getting us what we want, then it is time to evaluate alternative perspectives. We need to be innovative in our search for alternative perspectives. This is where we often get stuck. It can be difficult to see things from a different perspective. There is no right or wrong perspective, only different lens from which we view a situation. Once we evaluate each perspective in a non-judgmental manner, we can then select the perspective or combination of perspectives that most resonates with us. This becomes the resonant choice we move forward with and action. The resonant perspective is the one that opens us up to a world of possibilities, it makes us feel more empowered and energized, and we can commit to it.
Next time you feel your life is out of balance. Take a few minutes to reflect on your core values and then ask yourself. Am I designing my life and making choices that are in alignment with my values or am I feeling powerless and trapped by circumstances? Now begin the process of creating your future by making resonant choices and begin acting on them with firm commitment. You will notice that a world of possibilities are now available to you and you feel more alive and energized.
